New Zealand – The Next Big (Ski) Thing?
While the ski resorts of Europe transform into summer holiday destinations, on the other side of the world – the new ski season is big news. For in New Zealand, ski resorts including Mount Hutt, Coronet Peak and Treble Cone are preparing for a snow-covered season opening.
With heavy snowfall throughout May, many of New Zealand’s resorts embracing the perfect start to the new season with mountains covered in fresh powder. So, you’ve skied France, Austria and even hit the slopes of USA – will New Zealand be your next ski challenge?
At almost 12,000 miles, the journey itself from the UK to NZ takes more than a day. But with views like this, you can see why New Zealand could be the next big ski thing. If you’re considering it, make the most of your time and grab at least 2 weeks, even more if possible.
New Zealand ski resorts are split between the North and South Islands. Resorts including Maganui, Turoa and Tukino can be found on the North Island while the South boasts Craigieburn, Mt. Cheeseman and the famous Mt. Hutt.
Of the two, the South Island hosts the better ski resorts than its northern counterpart. Two of the most popular ski areas in New Zealand are Queenstown and Christchurch, both located on the South Island. However, with much-publicised snow across NZ’s major ski resorts, wherever you are heading – you can expect great ski conditions.
With continuous snowfall and very impressive ski conditions this pre-season, it is likely that more ambitious UK skiers and snowboarders may just be looking at NZ as a viable ski holiday destination. It clearly has some fantastic slopes that would be a pleasure to ski.
