This week’s poll – Should ski helmets be compulsory in all ski resorts?
The debate surrounding ski helmets hit a peak last year when actress Natasha Richardson died as a result of a skiing accident. She wasn’t wearing a helmet and was only skiing on the beginner slopes of the Mont Tremblant resort in Quebec. Richardson’s death joined several other publicised ski deaths involving skiers not wearing helmets, leading to the legalities of ski helmets being headline news again.
With many European ski resorts now making it a legal requirement for children to wear a ski helmet, we ask – should all skiers be required to wear a ski helmet while on the slopes? Many skiers and snowboarders will argue that it is their own safety and therefore their own choice but should the laws be changed?

started wearing a helmet about 5 years ago and had a dramatic fall in Courchevel 2 years ago i caught some ice and was sent hurtling over an un netted edge and fell about 30 feet-I know that if I hadn’t had a helmet my head would have taken a pounding-the helmet is comfortable and warm to wear and protects the head. Horse riders wear helmets as a matter of course and think skiers should consider.
Horse riders wear helmets because they are riding an animal which has a mind of its own.
What makes skiing safer is people skiing in control, within their limits, and not taking silly risks. Wearing a helmet might not encourage people to ski irresponsibly, but it doesn’t make them err on the side of caution either.
People shouldn’t treat the piste as a race track.
