New Igloo Village For St Moritz

Igloo Villages have opened for the winter at seven locations, each requiring 3000 tonnes of snow to provide their storm-proof lodging.

For Adrian Günter, initiator and Managing Director of Iglu-Dorf GmbH, this is now already the 15th igloo season. It was 1996 when the former ski and snowboard instructor built the very first igloo in Scoul, and at the time this was met with much shaking of heads in Lower Engadin.

“Since then we have continually professionalised our operations and have been able to continuously refine our concept, thanks to hundreds of dedicated staff and our sponsors,” explains the igloo pioneer from Bern.

Together with the entire team, he is once again looking forward to the opening of this year’s Igloo Villages. In addition to Gstaad, Davos-Klosters, Zermatt, Engelberg, the Zugspitze and Grandvalira in Andorra, an Igloo Village will also be offered for the first time in St. Moritz.

What began as a visionary’s daring idea has since been established as a successful business. Staying overnight surrounded by ice has “caught on”, and for many young people, as well as older people, families, clubs and companies, this has become a fascinating winter experience that they simply don’t want to miss out on. The tourist resorts in the Alps have also long been proud of “their” Igloo Village, which guarantees additional publicity and more visitors every year.

The new St. Moritz igloo village has been created at this stunning location next to the top station Muottas Muragl, offering a view over the Upper Engadine lakes. Two large igloos, decorated with artistic ice sculptures, provide guests with the perfect setting to while away the hours in cosy surroundings – whether as a place to stop during a winter hike, for some reinforcements before tobogganing down the slopes or for a gourmet evening by candlelight.

The top-class chef of the Berghotel Muottas Muragl will be personally attending to the catering. At the moment the Igloo Village is only available to snow-hungry guests during the day, but overnight stays are also planned from 2010/2011.
