What is it? Winter Olympics Extravaganza
Where is it? Trafalgar Square, London
When is it? Saturday 13th February, 2010

This Saturday, thousands of people will be in Trafalgar Square. Just like any other Saturday then. But wait, this week there’ll be a lot more than pigeons to keep you entertained.

Between 10am – 6pm, London’s Trafalgar Square will be celebrating the arrival of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. And going by weather reports, our nation’s capital could be under more snow than the host city as a serious snow shortage has been reported in Vancouver.

Visitors to one of London’s most famous landmarks will be able to watch the opening ceremony on giant TV screens, play virtual sports on Nintendo Wii and take a peak at the 4m ice scuplture of the Olympic rings. What more could you want?

Mayor Boris Johnson sees Vancouver in the Square as a great way to announce the changeover of attention from Vancouver 2010 to London 2012. He stated “Vancouver is at the end of its long and exciting journey to stage the greatest winter sporting event on the planet.”

“With a huge sense of excitement, tinged with some trepidation, I also welcome the fact that the world is now turning its attention to our capital, as the most amazing sports extravaganza on the planet will soon be upon us.”
