Team GB Results – Monday 15th February

As the Winter Olympics gets into full swing, Team GB saw a host of new names enter the Vancouver 2010 arena on Monday. We had four Olympic debutants competing across a range of events, as we continued to search for that elusive first medal.

Yesterday, Team GB’s Ed Drake competed in his very first Winter Olympics, finishing a respectable 38th in the men’s downhill. Drake said he was pretty pleased with his performance and found his first Olympic experience ‘great fun’.

His finishing time of 1:57:91 enabled him a Top 40 finish in a strong field of 64. He stated: “This is very much a learning curve for me, but it’s a great experience.” Drake expects his best performance in Vancouver to be in Friday’s Super G and we’ll all be watching with fingers crossed.

There were more Olympic debuts for Team GB with a trio of cross-country skiers making their bows. Youngsters Andrew Musgrave and Andrew Young, both from Aberdeenshire, impressed on their first appearances at the Games. Musgrave, 19 years old, completed the cross-country freestyle in 36:32.4 to finish 55th. Young, only 17 years old, finished 74th in a field of 95 with a final time of 38:45.1.

In the women’s event, another teenager put in a good performance to finish 68th in her only event. 19 year old Fiona Hughes crossed the line in 30:29.8 to complete her only event at this year’s Winter Olympics. She said: “I felt I skied pretty well… I was just a bit annoyed that I got caught behind a girl coming on the last corner into the stadium and tripped over her skis.”

What’s happening today in Vancouver 2010?

Tuesday will see some serious Team GB medal hopefuls compete. Look out for snowboarder Zoe Gillings, the men’s curlers led by David Murdoch, Ed Drake in the super combined and Lee-Steve Jackson in the 12.5km pursuit. Maybe that podium finish is on its way…
