Vancouver 2010 – Our man on the slopes…
We’ve got some guys in Vancouver who have been getting involved with all things Olympic. Not just chilling out, they’re working hard to make sure everything runs like clockwork. They will send us their diary entries from time to time, to let us know what they’re getting up to. We’re publishing this one a little late but it’s a good insight into what’s been happening in Vancouver and Whistler Blackcomb. Keep your eyes peeled for the next entry…
Day 5
The village is really buzzing now with fans from all over the world and also the World’s media everywhere. There have been some awesome events already with the IOC deciding that the luge could still take place after the death of the Georgian athlete. The final turn had to be completely rebuilt and the start gate was lowered to where the women usually start from but it still made for a great race with the German’s winning Gold & Silver.
The atmosphere over here is crazy now that Canada have finally won their first ever gold medal on home soil in the men’s moguls and were also desperately close to taking gold in the women’s – but were just beaten by the American’s on the last run of the event! The Canadian’s also picked up another Gold in ladies snowboard cross with Britain’s Zoe Gillings taking 6th place.
Today also marks the start of the men’s ice hockey which is what these games are all about for the vast majority of Canadians, so a win against Norway is vital for their chances. The Swiss team also added another 2 Golds to their haul in the men’s downhill & 15km cross country skiing which both ran on Monday.
Aside from the television celebs; on Saturday Arnold Schwarzenegger & Joe Biden (VP of USA) both visited the resort for lunch and came through my usual permit check point – but unfortunately I wasn’t working at that time so didn’t get to meet them!
The weather is still causing some problems as it is quite unusually warm and wet for this time of year, but around 15cm of fresh snow fell last night in Whistler so everybody here has their fingers crossed for some sunshine later in the week….
