Amy Williams Wins Gold at Vancouver 2010

20 February 2010 No Comment

It’s actually happened. Team GB have won gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics. After surprising the world with some lightning-fast training sessions, including breaking the track record, Williams produced the performance of her life to snatch gold with more than 0.5 seconds between her and second place.

Well done Amy!!

When Williams first took to the track yesterday, the world watched as this relatively unknown 27 year old obliterated the competition. Would the 27 year old slider from Bath buckle under the pressure as Team GB hoped for that elusive medal?

WIth a 0.3 second lead, Williams’ first run broke her own track record at a staggering 53.68. Nerves? What nerves? Williams was proving to be oblivious to the whole nation’s expectations. That gold medal edged ever closer as her competitors failed to get close to her overall time. With one run remaining, Amy Williams was ahead by a massive 0.52 seconds.

Another fantastic slide clocked in at 54 seconds and Williams was Olympic Champion. The world stood and watched as an outsider destroyed home nation, pre-Olympic favourite Mellisa Hollingsworth. Hollingsworth finished a very disappointing fifth.

As Amy Williams tried to come to terms with her outstanding achievement, six teams lodged a complaint against the helmet worn by our Team GB champion. Sour grapes? Probably. A valid complaint? Absolutely not as it was thrown out by the governing body.

Amy Williams is an Olympic gold medallist and Team GB got that podium finish. Now for the next one
