Weekly Skiing News Roundup – 12/03/2010

The Winter Olympics are just a distant memory and the end of the season is in sight but the skiing news just keeps on coming. Fans of Lindsey Vonn can enjoy the new Lindsey’s run at Vail Mountain, kilt-wearers and skiers alike will revel in CairnGorm’s record-breaking feat and ski cross enthusiasts can look forward to Les Arcs at the end of March. It’s business as usual for our weekly skiing news roundup – for the next month or so anyway.

Vail Names Trail After Lindsey Vonn
Vail Resorts have honoured Olympic Champion Lindsey Vonn, who moved to the resort in the late 1990s and has now won what the resort describes as, ‘Vail’s first ever gold medal’ by renaming a trail on Vail Mountain after Vonn. Full story….

Scottish Ski Areas Pass 9 Year Old Attendance Record
Scotland’s five mountain ski areas have been blessed not only by lots of snow this winter, but also more customers than any winter since 2001. Full story….

Intrawest Re-Finance Battle Goes On
The Fortress Investment Group LLC which owns Intrawest, which owns the leading Canadian resorts of Mont Tremblant and recent Olympic venue Whistler, is reported to have reached agreement with its creditors to extend the time it needs to refinance its debt to mid-April. Full story….

Telluride Installs Spectacular Stairway on Gold Hill
Telluride ski resort in Colorado has airlifted a new bridge and staircase to the left shoulder of Palmyra Peak. Heliqwest, a helicopter company based in Canada, airlifted two steel staircases and bridge over the ski resort to its final resting place – the span between Gold Hill Chutes 8 and 9. Full story….

More Snow Making For Gstaad
Gstaad, which has reported bumper summer visitors in recent years, has invested in more snow making this winter. Full story….

World Record Achieved For Skiing In Kilts
235 skiers and snowboarders set a world record for the largest number of kilted skiers/snowboarders skiing down a piste at once on Saturday on the slopes of CairnGorm Mountain. All participants paid an entry fee of £5 to take part and all the funds will be split between Maggie’s Highland, a cancer hospice charity, and the Badenoch & Strathspey Schools Skiing Programme.
