Les 2 Alpes preview 2010 summer ski season

26 March 2010 One Comment

Les 2 Alpes has announced it will open for the summer from June 16 to August 28. The ski lifts are open 7 days a week, from 7.15 am to 12.30pm for skiers and until 4.30pm for walkers and mountain bikers with fast access thanks to the “Jandri Express” cable car.

Les 2 Alpes is home to the largest skiable glacier in Europe, set between an altitude of 2900 metres and 3600 metres and boasting a 700 metre vertical drop. It also offers more than 80 other activities to guests in the resort in the summer.

There are 90 hectares of ski runs with four blue, two green and two red runs, as well as a freestyle zone and off-piste area. There are 16 ski lifts operating in summer (compared to 51 in winter), including two gondola lifts, a cable car, four chairlifts, seven drag lifts, a snow tow and a funicular and an inclined lift.

Les 2 Alpes offered summer skiing for the first time more than 40 years ago; a brave move that was to put the mountains, and more importantly the resort, well and truly on the map as a summer destination.

On average, 3 000 skiers take the lifts up to the glacier every day to enjoy summer skiing; this represents 138 284 skier during summer. The Italians represent 40% of the resort’s clientele.

The sports shops provide ski and snowboard equipment rentals, just as they do in winter. The ski schools are also on hand to provide tuition during the summer months (around 50 instructors, 10 ski schools offering skiing and snowboarding lessons, competition skiing, national ski diploma training, slalom, freestyle, mogul training…). Summer skiing is open to everyone and beginners can discover the sport on the glacier with its gentle descents and wide open slopes; perfect for learning to ski or snowboard.

A summer skipass provides access to the summer ski area, as well as all tourist ski lifts (walkers and mountain bikers). For adult this 33.50 for one day, for under 13s or over 65s €26.80 or free for the under 5’s and over 72’s. A half day pass at reduced rates is also available.

Alternatively a full holiday pass that gives unlimited access to summer ski and walker’s lifts plus additional services (swimming pool, ice rink, tennis courts, archery, golf driving range, water sports and summer toboggan) and preferential rates on many other activities is available for 6 days at 167.50€ for adults and 134€ for those aged under 13 or over 65.

There are a couple of must-dos if visiting Les Deux Alpes. One is the Croisière Blanche caterpillar excursions to Dome de Lauze where you can admire the view out over the glacier. Another is the Ice Grotto where you can view the unique ice sculptures. More information can be found at http://www.summerski.co.uk.
