Swiss resort gets solar powered ski lift
The tiny Swiss village of Tenna will launch the world’s second ski lift powered entirely by solar energy in December 2010.
The lift’s solar panels will have the capacity to generate 90,000KWh of power, more than enough to supply the resort’s 3 ski lifts, each consuming about 22,000KWh. Any excess energy will be used to power the homes of the town’s 110 inhabitants.
The new solar powered ski lifts in Tenna are expected to open in December 2010. The Tenna project will follow the Westendorf T Bar lift, which became the first ski lift entirely powered by solar when it was opened in 2008. The Westendorf T Bar, known as Sonnenlift, runs over the Brixen main road and into the mountains of the Ski Welt area.
