You may think that a ski trip on the other side of the Atlantic will cost hundreds of pounds more than a trip to Europe. But with some fantastic new deals from Crystal Ski for the resort of Fernie in Canada’s British Columbia, you could be heading there for the same price as a trip to some resorts in France, Austria, or Italy.

Fernie has the largest vertical drop out of all the resorts in the Canadian Rockies. The resort is known for its ‘steep and deep’ terrain – with five big alpine bowls to explore and some of the best powder anywhere in North America.

But Fernie is not just for those seeking the ultimate backcountry powder – there are also 142 named trails with something for all abilities – Fernie can be as steep as you want it to be.

Fernie snow conditions

Fernie has received nearly 1.5 metres of snowfall in the last week (up to 18 January), with over a metre of the white stuff falling in the last 24 hours. It’s one of the places that’s never short of powder, with an annual average snowfall of 29 feet, or 8.8 metres. Current snow pack is 230cm – and the snow will stay put as it’s chilly out there. Today’s high will be minus 18 degrees Celsius. Not so great if you’re on the hill, but fantastic conditions to preserve all that snow all season long!

What’s new in Fernie for 2011/12

Fernie have recently opened the Polar Peak lift, and added another 22 runs to the ski area, bringing the total skiable terrain to over 2500 acres.
